"We want to hear about helplines that offer practical, easy-to-follow feeding suggestions which are nevertheless based on sound science, rather than merely make a sales pitch," said BETA's executive director Claire Williams.
When making a nomination, BETA is also keen to know whether helplines have provided follow-up information and how useful this proved to be.
"Good nutritional advice can genuinely improve a horse's condition, performance and overall well-being. That's why Horsemart is so delighted to become this important award's new sponsor," said Jo Metcalfe of leading equestrian website Horsemart.
Private and professional horse owners, as well as feed merchants, are invited to send in their nominations for the Horsemart Nutritional Helpline of the Year Award. Companies supplying equine feeds, feed balancers, forages and supplements are eligible.
Nominations close on 9th January 2009, after which a short list will be drawn up for final judging involving incognito calls.
