Top equestrian photographer launches calendar to help beat strangles Eighteen months after the launch of their international campaign to raise awareness of strangles, the Animal Health Trust (AHT) and The British Horse Society (BHS) are still desperate to raise money to beat the killer disease.
The Breaking the Strangles Hold campaign was launched in February 2007 by HRH The Princess Royal with a target of raising £250,000.
It has proved enormously successful and money raised so far has been used to develop a diagnostic screening test.
Released in March this year the test is perfect for screening horses and ponies prior to movement, sales or competition.
Now further funds are needed to enable scientists to develop a vaccine that will rid the equine world of strangles.
To help boost the campaign, renowned equine photographer Marie Bushill has produced a calendar for 2009 called Passion for Horses.
This beautiful year planner features exclusive artwork by Marie, including shots of the Household Cavalry riding through the waves on Holkham Beach, north Norfolk, a photograph of The Princess Royal with her horse, and two legends of the turf, jockey Lester Piggott riding Desert Orchid. | Top equestrian photographer Marie Bushill with Desert Orchid. Talking about her decision to publish the calendar Marie said there were three horses that had really influenced her career as an equestrian photographer. The legendary Desert Orchid, the 2000 Oaks winner, Love Divine, and the beautiful Russian thoroughbred, Vifillia.
To help boost the campaign, renowned equine photographer Marie Bushill has produced a calendar for 2009 called Passion for Horses.
| "Desert Orchid was introduced to me via jockey Richard Dunwoody during a photo session for a magazine," said Marie. "This lead to an invitation by Richard Burridge to take a portrait of his famous grey in August 1999.
The weather forecast was for cloud and rain later in the day. With the sky getting darker, I had to be quick to capture the beauty and charisma of this horse too full of life to stand still for more than a few seconds.
"I never forget his big beautiful eyes and could not dream of what adventures this portrait would get me into during the following years."
Marie's portrait of 'Dessie' brought her to the beautiful and famous Love Divine at Lordship Stud. "Her owner wanted a portrait photograph of her after seeing the one of Dessie in the magazine.
The Lordship Stud has since provided many more beautiful models for my horse calendars," said Marie.

Marie came across Vifillia when she moved to Suffolk in 2001. "I was planning to take a photograph of her one morning. It was beautiful sunshine and she was waiting in her box, groomed and ready to be taken out. The light was stunning.
You could only see her beautiful head and every little whisker. It was one of those perfect pictures," she said.
It was this photograph that caught the eye of the world's largest calendar publisher, Browntrout in the USA, which published Marie's first calendar, The Horse 2004, with Vifillia on the cover.
"Thanks to these three wonderful horses and one year's hard work with the Animal Health Trust in
Newmarket, I am launching the calendar 'A Passion for Horses 2009'," she said.
"All money raised will go to the research for the new vaccine against Strangles."
The calendar costs £9.99 plus £1.50 postage and packing with all proceeds going directly to the Breaking the Strangles Hold campaign.
