SPREAD STRANGLES KNOWLEDGE NOT THE DISEASE, SAYS SANCTUARY

SPREAD STRANGLES KNOWLEDGE NOT THE DISEASE, SAYS SANCTUARY

A horse sanctuary is embarking on a series of talks for yard owners, managers and horse owners on the subject of strangles.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary held a one-off event earlier this month at its Norwich headquarters, which was so well received the charity has decided to take the information ‘on the road' and organise more at livery yards throughout East Anglia.

"No matter how much you think you know about strangles, it's good to refresh your thinking and even help others improve theirs," explains Redwings' senior veterinary surgeon Nicolas de Brauwere. "There will be the opportunity to attend sessions at our headquarters in the coming months but if they wish, we are also asking yard owners to come forward and offer to host a relaxed and enjoyable talk, which they can invite their existing and potential owners to. It would help horses across the UK enormously if more people understood and worked to prevent the spread of strangles."

"This is very useful for yard owners as their yard is their business, and that needs protecting, but also for horse owners to know what to look for in a well-protected yard," continues Nicolas. "There are too many myths and old wives' tales that circulate about strangles, and unfortunately people are often too ashamed or anxious to own up and ask for help when strangles strikes. We'll be giving away free sample quarantine posters, a list of FAQs and a strangles management checklist to help them stay prepared. This way we can protect our local horse population and equine businesses and relieve some of the stigma at the same time."

Yard or equestrian centres interested in hosting a talk or people interested in attending future sessions at Redwings Hapton HQ can contact the team on 01508 481008 or email welfare@redwings.co.uk
