All hands on deck for BHS Scotland at Blair Castle International Horse trials

A whole host of supporting organisations and individuals helped BHS Scotland make a truly resounding impact as the benefiting charity at this year's Blair Castle International Horse Trials.

By the end of four happy but muddy days the Society in Scotland was several thousand pounds better off and had impressed more than 40,000 people with the breadth of work that the charity carries out across Scotland.

BHS Scotland enlisted a wide range of support, including from top event riders Caroline Powell, Polly Stockton, William Fox-Pitt, Jeanette Brakewell and Piggy French who led fund raising course walks around the 2 and 3 star courses.

The Lothian and Borders Mounted Police Mounted Branch presented four main ring displays and the RAF Leuchars Pipe band attended the event on the Saturday to pipe in support of BHS Scotland.

On Sunday the RAF Falcons parachute display team jumped into the main ring to promote the low flying helpline that is a partnership between BHS and MOD.

Fund raising efforts saw no limits quite literally when Scottish BHS Development Officer Helene Mauchlen, event commentator Ed Holloway and three of the event riders ran to the top of a 500m heather clad hill that overlooks the main arena, raising the BHS flag on the summit, and £250 for the Society. The ascent took just 22 minutes.

BHSS Chairman Loraine Young said: "What a team we were as we maximised the opportunity to promote ourselves and raise funds that being benefiting charity gave us.

"We'd like to thank the Blair organisers for choosing BHSS for 2008 and also all the volunteers who manned left luggage stands, served teas, rattled cans, acted as marshals and handed out information.

"We certainly made an impact. Our membership recruitment yielded 150 new members and book sales were huge too - it was a big effort but worthwhile."

The event also saw the finals of three BHS run competition series: The Stewarts Building Supplies Working Hunter Finals, The BRC Equissage Working Hunter Finals and the British Horse Feeds Style Jumping finals - all three were the culmination of 60 regional qualifiers!

More than 50 BHS volunteers attended the Blair Castle International Horse Trials in support of the BHS Scotland, and it was fitting that the Society was able to present 40 volunteers with Long Services awards at the event.
