The Blue Cross offers support to Coors horses Animal charity The Blue Cross has offered its support to the Coors Visitor Centre by providing a home for its three Shire horses until the future of the museum has been decided. The horses were transferred to The Blue Cross equine centre on Dovecliffe Road last week, where they will be cared for by the charity's experienced staff for the rest of the summer. | |
While its future is still being debated by local groups, Museum Director Peter Orgill was keen to find a secure home for the horses - Carling, Reef and White Shield - and contacted The Blue Cross for help.
Peter explained: "Whatever the future may hold, we've always known that Coors would close its doors at the end of June and that we'd need to find somewhere else for the horses. We're very grateful to The Blue Cross for offering their help on a temporary basis. It was an ideal solution for us as we can be sure the horses will be well cared for and people will still be able to visit them over the summer."
The Blue Cross has been busy preparing for the arrival of the Coors horses, fencing off a section of the 65 acre site where they will be turned out to graze for the next few months. They will spend the first two weeks settling in to the centre without any contact with visitors or the other residents, which is standard procedure for new arrivals. Then it is hoped that the Shires will live alongside some of the Blue Cross horses that are currently looking for homes.
Kath Urwin, centre manager of The Blue Cross in Rolleston said: "While our priority is to rehabilitate and rehome horses and ponies, we decided to make an exception in this case by offering temporary boarding to the Coors horses. Given the uncertain future of the museum, it's commendable that the management have taken this responsible step to ensure the ongoing welfare of their horses. And as the horses are so popular in this area, we're pleased that visitors will still have the chance to come and see them at The Blue Cross."
As The Blue Cross is a charity that receives no government funding, Coors will make a donation towards the cost of the upkeep of the horses during their stay. Any further donations from the public will be welcomed as always.
