Horse Trials competitors to test FEI Course designers skills

Horse Trials competitors to test FEI Course designer's skills ahead of European Pony Championships

Competitors at Bishop Burton College's May Horse Trials will get the chance to ride a cross country course designed by Eric Winter, the man who has been given the job of putting together a course for the upcoming FEI European Pony Championships.

The Championships will be held at the College between the 28th July and 1st August.

Eric, who has been cross country course designer at Blenheim for a number of years and also counts Highclere, Withington and Longleat among his regular ‘jobs', stepped in to create three tracks at Bishop Burton, along with British Eventing Regional Director Chris Shaw.

Eric and Chris have designed three of the College's four courses; BE90, BE100 and Novice and have made some changes that they hope competitors will appreciated.

Eric said: "We haven't strayed too much from Richard Carruthers' original tracks as they work very well, plus we don't want to be crossing the areas we'll be using for the European Pony Championships.

"We've introduced a new complex with an angled step at the top on the Novice course, and we've also added a new fence on the terraces; again for the Novice riders, which should give them something to think about."

The College's equine director Kim Knightley is delighted that both Eric and Chris have been involved in designing the courses this year.

"We are thrilled to have someone as experienced and well-respected as Eric on board as cross country course designer and of course, Chris Shaw, who knows the College very well and has used that knowledge to build a great course.

"It will be very interesting to see what the competitors make of the tracks - particularly in the run-up to the European Pony Championships."

The College's May trials will run on Saturday May 29th (BE100, Novice) and Sunday 30th May (BE90; BE100).

Spectators are welcome and tickets can be purchased on the gate, on the day: £4 per individual or £10 per car.
