Torchwood Star Welcomes Home Two Young Riders Raising Money for Charity

Torchwood Star Welcomes Home Two Young Riders Raising Money for Charity

On 11th July 09 Tabby Wheeler and Bethan Matthews completed a monumental 135 miles sponsored ride from Worcestershire to Lluest Horse and Pony Trust,  Llangadog,  Carmarthenshire to raise much needed funds for the charity. Gareth David-Lloyd, star of the hit BBC series Torchwood and patron of Lluest was there to welcome them back, together with friends and family. Gareth (who played Ianto in the series) toured the Farm, met the animals and rode  Brandy, a long standing resident.

Bethan rode Suzie, a horse she has on loan from Lluest and Tabby rode Pappie, kindly lent by Bethan's  family. Their progress was followed by a GPS device called TRAAKiT  that was fitted to one of the horse's head collars giving a satellite location to ensure their safety on route. Voices for Horses an equestrian community based web site introduced the designers  of TRAAKiT and Lluest Horse and Pony Trust to each other to trial the device specifically for horses and  rider's safety.

This introduction proved valuable in more ways than one as Tabby and Bethen found themselves lost high up in the Brecon Beacons.

"We knew we were lost and for a while it was scarey. What really helped was knowing the Trust and others were following our progress and would have been able to find us and get help to us if we had needed it." TRAAKiT also reassured the manager of Lluest when one evening the girls had not called in. "I was able to look at the computer, follow their tracks and  see they had arrived at  the prearranged destination".

"It was doing its job" said Tim Young from TRAAKiT" It reassured everyone involved and  provided the riders with back up safety measures such as being able to use their mobile phones to find out where they were, set an Invisible Security Fence around themselves  when they were camping and be tracked and found if necessary.  Any one who had been given specific computer  login details could track the girls to check their progress and welfare"

The girls and horses stayed free at various Bed and Breakfast locations along the way and were backed up by the Mathews family who supplied food every evening for both horses and riders. They also generously donated beef to the B&B's in return for their generosity in looking after the girls and their horses.

The girls have raised several hundred pounds for Lluest Horse and Pony Trust and money is still coming in.
