ALL CHANGE AT NATIONAL EQUINE WELFARE COUNCIL

ALL CHANGE AT NATIONAL EQUINE WELFARE COUNCIL

The National Equine Welfare Council has new premises, a new logo and new leadership on the Management Board to take it into the next decade.

The Council, a membership organisation formed in 1977, which is dedicated to improving equine welfare throughout the UK, has a brand new logo designed to reflect its long history and has moved to new premises in Warwickshire, with two new administrators on hand to offer advice and assistance to horse owners and its member organisations alike.

There have been changes in personnel too, as Nicolas De Brauwere, who is a senior vet and Head of Welfare, Rehabilitation and Education at Redwings Horse Sanctuary, takes the reins as Chairman of the Management Board, while Rebecca Evans, Equine Welfare & Grants Manager at The Horse Trust, has been appointed Vice Chairman. Representatives from The Donkey Sanctuary, British Eventing, World Horse Welfare and The British Horse Society also form part of the group.

Nicolas De Brauwere and Rebecca Evans said they were delighted with the trust placed in them to lead the Management Board in taking NEWC forward with the many challenges facing equine welfare at this time.

These include the production of the third revision of the Equine Industry Welfare Guidelines Compendium, consolidating NEWC's position as the primary source of information on equine welfare issues and advising on new legislation such as the possible future regulation of animal sanctuaries.

More about NEWC: The National Equine Welfare Council was set up in 1977 with the aim of uniting the equine welfare industry and raising equine welfare standards nationwide. It now has a membership base of over 60 welfare organisations, including equine welfare charities large and small throughout the United Kingdom as well as a multitude of organisations from the equestrian and veterinary sectors of the horse industry.

Its work includes support for small welfare organisations, making representations to Government and advising individuals. It also produces a Code of Practice for those organisations involved in the keeping of horses, ponies, asses, mules & donkeys and supports members by providing up to date information, and representing them to Government and other bodies. Member organisations involved in the keeping of equines can be relied upon to achieve excellent standards of care for their animals. Many operate loan schemes whereby horses and ponies go out on loan to inspected homes whilst remaining the property of the charity and being protected for the rest of their lives.
