Aussie rules for dressage rider Daniel Watson

Aussie rules for dressage rider Daniel Watson

An elated Daniel Watson stepped off the plane from Australia yesterday, one of two riders selected to represent GB at the Sydney CDI 2009, 7-9 May. He achieved 4th place on borrowed horse Neversfelde Kudu in the Intermediare I with 64.26% and 5th in the Freestyle on 67.55% in front of a sell out Aussie crowd. The highest placed visiting rider on a borrowed horse, Watson's efforts also earned him the Best International Rider Award.

The 32 year old who presides over the Fiddlers Green Stud in Kent commented; "It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. You never know how these things are going to turn out but it all went brilliantly, the whole show was fantastic, it's been an absolutely amazing experience.

"The Kur on the Saturday evening was something else - I've never ridden in an atmosphere like it! The indoor arena was absolutely packed, kids running up and down the isles, you just don't find that sort of intensity at shows in England."

As well as his success in the Small tour Watson also rode to 10th place in the PSG despite only having 30 mins to get to know his horse. "To get on and ride a strange horse under that sort of pressure isn't the easiest thing to do but I got on really well with both horses. This experience has really given me a taste of international competition and I really want to get out there and do more on my own horses."

Watson, A BD list 4 judge and trainer, returns home to focus his attention on advanced rides Daniolo and Furieux 2 both of which he is campaigning for the National Dressage Championships 2009. He also hopes to compete at Hartpury CDI in July.
