WIN Tickets for The British Jumping Derby Meeting at Hickstead June 25 to June 28

WIN Tickets for The British Jumping Derby Meeting at Hickstead  - June 25 to June 28

How to win tickets
Timetable for the International Arena

Clear rounds in the DFS Derby are hard to come by. It has been five years since John Whitaker and Buddy Bunn jumped a faultless round to claim the Derby of 2004. Last year's victors, William Funnell and Cortaflex Mondriaan, managed a clean sheet in the second round to take the spoils after Geoff Billington frustratingly lowered the infamous Derby rails in both rounds.

The class was devised as "the supreme test of horse and rider" and with obstacles like the 10ft 6ins Derby Bank and the tricky three elements of the Devil's Dyke it has lived up to that. Out of about 1,680 rounds jumped since it began in 1961, only 49 have been faultless.

Derby day, this year on June 28, is the climax to the four-day British Jumping Derby Meeting, and sees queues at Hickstead's gates and competition for the free seats in two of the grandstands overlooking the International Arena.  A day not to be missed, but even then just one of a meeting packed with exciting, international and national showjumping as well as fascinating showing classes. And there are six arenas in use each day and about 150 shopping stands to occupy the time.

Friday is an important one on the schedule. Horses which have won the DFS Derby in previous years get an automatic place among the starters, but Friday's Derby Trial, with enhanced prize money of £16,000, decides who will fill the remaining places - and there's only 35 to start.

Saturday, too, has a programme not to be missed. The Hickstead Amateur Championship opens the International Arena programme and other highlights include the elegant Hacks vying for the Supreme Championship and the high-speed thrills in the scurry driving.

But the one not to be missed is the Bunn Leisure Speed Derby, when Essex rider Ben Maher will be looking for a place in the record books. Only two riders, David Bowen and John Ledingham, have ever won this challenging title three times, and this year Ben will be determined to join them.
