United States Ban on horse slaughter

United States-Ban on horse slaughter

The Congress in the United States approved a measure last year , that placed a ban on the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

Animal welfare groups, have been long campaigning for the ban, they have already orchestrated the closure of three horse slaughterhouses last year.

The proposed legislation known as "Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act" was sponsored by Rep John Conyers chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

Opposition to the law, mainly from farmers and ranchers, claim that the passing of the law will in fact add to the cruelty of hoses, as now there is no lawful or legal way do get rid of unwanted horse, which will starve after running wild and causing damage to farms.

There has been a new trade developed with Canada, who are taking around 800 horses a week for slaughter.

The law is already backfiring, with unwanted horses being turned loose and no one able to catch them.
