BHS TREC launches brand new Championship of Great Britain

BHS TREC launches brand new Championship of Great Britain

The 2009 BHS TREC Championship of Great Britain will be taking place in Karecole Farm Stables in Scotland between 21 - 23 August.

There will be just one BHS TREC Championship in 2009, a change from previous years where three National Championships were held across the UK.

The new format has been introduced to further the credibility of the BHS TREC Championship and raise the continually high standard of entrants to the competitions.

"BHS TREC is developing as a popular, easily accessible sport that appeals to all types of riders," said Carolyn MacDonald, Chairman of the Scottish TREC Advisory Group (STAG). "It is great to see that the growth of the sport is such that we now have the credibility to have a qualifying championship event."

Karecole Farm Stables in West Linton on the Scottish Borders, was chosen by STAG and the BHS because of its 50-acre field with great prospects for TREC obstacles including banks, hills, river crossings and steps. There is also the potential to ride on Pentland Hills National Park for the orienteering section with a great mixture of terrain.

Helen Owens Senior Executive, BHS Competitions, said " The office team are delighted to be working alongside STAG again in what will be an exciting time in the development of BHS TREC, especially with the new format of one Championship".

Carolyn Macdonald added: "Competitors should try and qualify to take part in the British Championship as it really is a unique experience and atmosphere. It is great to be there representing your country either as part of the Team or as an Individual.

"The 2009 Championships will offer a challenging PTV and PoR and really allow our TREC riders to test themselves and the partnership they have with their horse."

A number of qualifiers will be held around the country for the BHS TREC Championships of Great Britain 2009. Further information can be found at www.bhs.org.uk.

Organisers of a BHS TREC competition who would like their event to be a championship qualifier must read the guidelines on the BHS website and complete an application form.

About the BHS TREC Championship of Great Britain 2009:

If a competitor finished between 1st to 10th at a qualifying event at the level they wish to compete at the Championships, then they will qualify for the 2009 Championships. If someone who was placed 1st - 10th at a qualifier has already qualified than the qualifying place is then passed down the line.

If a competitor has completed a BHS TREC Championship in the last two years they will also qualify for a place at the Championship.

This is based on the rider only - not horse/rider combination (thus allowing for hired/borrowed/young horses being used).

TREC consists of three phases and can take place on one day or two. At higher levels, the orienteering phase can be extremely testing and at championship level, the competition takes place over two days with the orienteering phase on one day and the remaining two phases on the other day.

POR stands for ‘Parcours d'Orientation et de Regularite', another French term used to describe the navigation phase of TREC, or ‘orienteering on horse back'. It is the first phase of TREC.

Phase two is ‘Matrisse des Allures' or Control of Paces (CP). A rider must ride along a straight line, first in canter then in walk. The slower the canter and the faster the walk, the more marks a rider will be awarded. This phase is to test the rider's control over their horse.

PTV stands for ‘Parcours en Terrain Varie'. It is a French term and is used to describe the timed cross-country obstacle phase of TREC. It is the third phase of a TREC competition.
