Horses killed on motorway

Two horses have died in a collision with an articulated lorry after a group of more than 30 wandered on to a motorway in South Yorkshire.

The M1 was closed in both directions between junctions 30 and 31 for an hour as police helicopters used thermal imaging equipment to search the area.

Thirty-one horses were recovered after they escaped from a grazing field close to Aston at 0030 GMT on Wednesday.

Police fear some horses may still be on the loose.

Further collisions
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "The M1 was closed in both directions after a number of horses wandered onto the carriageway resulting in a collision.

"Two horses died in the incident which involved an articulated lorry striking the horses on the southbound entry slip road at junction 31.

"Police believe that a few horses may still be on the loose, having assisted in locating a further 31 overnight.

"The horses had been grazing on land just off Hardwick Lane close to junction 31 and appear to have got lost just before 12.30am this morning.

"The motorway was closed from junction 30 in Derbyshire to junction 31 for around one hour after officers feared more collisions."

The lorry driver was not injured in the accident.
