About the National Equine Database
- Passport information from all UK Passport Issuing Organisations (PIOs) in operation since 2006, updated monthly
- A rapidly growing base of Pedigree details, verified by the breed organisations
- Increasing numbers of Performance records supplied by each discipline body
NED contains an equine record for every passport issued by a UK Passport Issuing Organisation (PIO), which contains the name of the horse, its age, gender, height, colour, sire and dam (where provided).
These basic details are available for you to view free of charge.
Once you have identified the equine you would like to look at, you will have the option of performing a variety of functions which include producing reports on pedigree, performance, grading and evaluations.
NED is governed by a company called NED Ltd, which is supported and guided by the British Equestrian
Federation (BEF).
NED is committed to supporting the British horse industry by providing the only central source of verified identity, performance and pedigree information for all horses with UK passports.
NED is the National Equine Database - a collaborative project between Defra and the horse industry led by BEF.
NED is a one-stop-shop website, providing the ONLY central source of information for in excess of a million horses in the UK.
NED will enable users to:
- Search for their own horse and update / add information
- Trace and track ‘favourite' horses and ponies
- Check information contained in passports - particularly useful when buying a horse or pony
- Obtain pedigree information for some horses and ponies
- Obtain competition results for some horses and ponies
Data in NED - how good is it?
NED report that:
Of the 1.2 million data records in NED, over 85% have sire and dam information.
In addition, NED has a complete results set from British Dressage, British Eventing, the British Show Jumping Association, the British Horseracing Board, the BEF Futurity and Young Horse Evaluations, and soon the Burghley Young Event Horse finals. Working closely together, Data Provider Liaison Director Julia Hodkin and Breed Society Liaison Director Corrina Duncan continue to forge excellent relationships with Data Providers leading to supply of more new data on a daily basis from existing and new voluntary Data Providers. The data is significantly better than last reported - and improving all the time.
NED Mythbusters
Popular myths abound about what NED may and may not do (you may have seen some of this covered in publications or web forums). To avoid and further confusion NED offer the facts "from the horse's mouth", so to speak.
Myth: That Directors are benefiting from access to commercially sensitive data
BEF appointed NED Directors only have access to the same data as the general public. They do not have access to ANY commercially sensitive personal details. To permit this would be in contravention of the Data Protection Act 1998 which is rigorously adhered to. The Terms and Conditions of Directors' appointments are robust and seek to ensure that no NED Director receives any financial or commercial benefits.
Myth: That studbooks have been overlooked in the Director appointment process
BEF appointed directors, irrespective of some industry perceptions, have considerable experience of and contacts with UK studbooks. Since the appointment of the new Directors, more new data has been received by NED than in any previous two months since the project has been underway and with their help, we have exceeded our pre launch target for voluntary data provision.
Myth: For the good of NED, Directors should have no commercial connections with the horse industry
It was felt that appointing Directors with a blend of equine and commercial skills and experience and who would work well together was important, especially over the launch period. A particular skill set was required to take a brand new technological product to a marketplace which has comparatively moderate levels of IT awareness. An understanding of the target market for the NED product was crucial because there is a tremendous variety in the profile of the 720,000 horse owners1 and our Directors needed to have experience of the equine sector, in all its forms.
Myth: NED can't go live without voluntary data from ALL Studbooks
A small number of studbooks have chosen not to provide voluntary data to NED. This is absolutely the decision of the individual studbook and it is a simple process to refer on any queries from the public regarding any data they believe should be on NED to the studbook in question (see the section covering Enquiry Handling Service).
