He said: "Today has been absolutely great. I was thrilled to discover I was the Society's 70,000th member and look forward to enjoying the champagne!"
Mr Parkinson joined the Society when ill health made him realise that he could not afford to be without insurance. He said: "The insurance that you receive as part of your BHS membership is invaluable. For little more than £1 per week you've got absolute peace of mind - anyone that can afford to ride can afford that.
"It is much more than insurance though. For me, welfare is top of the list. I am lucky to have grown up surrounded by horses and have had knowledge passed on to me over the years, but there are so many people out there around horses without sufficient knowledge. The work the BHS does in providing education to prevent suffering is vital."
