Richard Curtis  Go Freestyle with Richard Curtis and his K9 Freestyle Team!

Richard has found time in his preperations for the show, to write his pre-show blog and offer advice for making your dog "horse safe".........

"Hi Everyone!

Well we are very much looking forward to attending the forthcoming Holistic horse show as not only will it be great working alongside top western rider David Deptford but it will also be in the dry! This year I have been all over the UK doing the K9 Freestyle dog display but as we all know it's been a bit wet, so I'm getting quite good at dancing in waterproof clothing.

The team has seen a new addition this season in the form of an apricot bundle of fluff called Whizzy. She is only four months at present and we were going to call her accident as she was the result of an illicit affair between a border collie and an apricot standard poodle!

She is proving a big hit with the crowd and I'm sure when you see her in my display you will see why. Training starts as soon as I get the dogs so she is starting to do some basics but its all about sowing the seeds for moves I want later so it's lots of play and fun at the moment.

As well as doing the displays I also do workshops and am just getting things ready for a trip to the USA where I will be presenting various seminars. The sport of heelwork to music or freestyle has really taken off worldwide and I get asked to teach abroad a lot but as always it's a wrench to leave the dogs.

Although I do not have a horse myself my dogs come in contact regularly with horses and livestock as I live very close to the New Forest.

Getting the dogs used to horses is very important especially with the Collie types as they have the chase drive bred into them so they will go after things that are moving. I like to get my pups used to seeing livestock as early as possible so that horses just becomes part of the scenery rather than something new. To be honest my dogs will normally leave the horses alone but it is often another story where horse droppings are concerned! Disco, my charismatic Portuguese water dog delights in rolling around in the runniest one she can find but I will assure you when she comes to the Holistic horse show she will have been bathed so don't be afraid to touch her.

Tips on getting you dog use to horses

Make sure you have taught good basic commands such as sit, down and come. Have the dog on lead when first taking the dog to see horses and try to walk past the horse ignoring it as very often the dog will do the same. If the dog shows interest in the horse use a leave command and as the dog comes away reward the dog with an nice treat. Horses trotting past can often get the dog chasing after them so work on an immediate down/stop. This can be done by throwing the dog's toy to simulate the horse and getting it to stop before it gets to it.

We can't wait to meet you all at the show in a couple of weeks

Bye for now! Richard"
