Outstanding Animal Images Impress The Judges

Outstanding Animal Images Impress The Judges

Stunning images taken by some of the best upcoming wildlife photographers in the UK have made it through to the final stages of the prestigious RSPCA Young Photographer Awards.   The spectacular shots of everything from cats to crabs and butterflies to bull mastiffs were entered into the RSPCA Young Photographer Awards 2008 (YPA08), which will climax in December at an exclusive awards ceremony at HM Tower of London.

The photographs stood out among the thousands of images entered online for the first time using the YPA08 website.   Judges of this year's competition, including BBC Really Wild Show presenter Nick Baker and model Penny Lancaster-Stewart, were overwhelmed by the high quality of entries in all four categories.

The judging panel will now draw up a final shortlist before the winners will be announced in London on 12 December.   RSPCA Chief Photographer Andrew Forsyth said he was delighted at the calibre of entries in the annual competition - sponsored by Olympus and Warner Midlands - which is now in its 18th year.

He said: "The quality of entries this year has been astonishing. Any of these could have been a winner in previous years, so it's a difficult year to be a judge."   A shortlist of finalists will be unveiled later this year ahead of the awards ceremony in the spectacular surroundings of the Tower of London on 12 December.

Awards will be given to the winners of the four categories, which include Under 12s, 12-18 Years, the Olympus Portfolio and Pet Personalities. The overall winning image will be selected from the four categories.
