Veterinary Scientists Launch Equine Colic Website Veterinary Scientists at the University of Liverpool have launched a unique website dedicated to improving understanding of equine colic. Colic is a term used to describe the behavioural signs associated with severe abdominal pain. It is the single most important cause of death in horses and difficult to diagnose because there are around 150 different causes of colic that all result in the same pattern of symptoms.

Veterinary surgeons have now developed a website dedicated to explaining the causes, prevention and treatment of colic in order to provide more detailed information about the condition to veterinary surgeons and horse owners.

Professor Chris Proudman, Head of the Equine Division at the University of Liverpool said: "Liverpool is one of the major equine hospitals in the north of England and has specialist interests and expertise in treating horses showing signs of colic.  We are currently working to develop a Centre for Colic Prevention, which will house researchers, clinicians and laboratories and will act as a focus for our colic research and for information dissemination.

"This new website will be an important resource in raising awareness of this condition and making important scientific research more accessible to horse owners, vets in practice, and veterinary students."

The website also provides links to related scientific papers and film footage which answers key questions about surgical procedures and methods of prevention.

The site was launched at the British Equine Veterinary Association Symposium in Liverpool where clinicians and researchers from all over the world will share their research and experiences of treating equine colic. The website has been made possible by the support of PetPlan Charitable Trust and can be accesses at: www.liv.ac.uk/equinecolic
