Keep up to date here with the Fight For Change Petition

Lucinda McAlpine speaks on behalf of the petition.

The recent case of Spindles Farm, Amersham must be a wake up call and bring to our attention the need for regulation in the the equine industry. It is important that we have legislation that can create confidence when buying and selling through dealers and put a stop to the distress caused by individuals who run their businesses below an acceptable standard. Anyone likely to sell on a horse that they care for should support this petition to ensure that their horse does not end up in a place such as Spindle's Farm.

Here are a handful of the hundreds of comments coming in on your petition forms.

This should be actioned immediately in light of this despicable example of equine cruelty, it is a disgrace that such traders are not already licensed

Laws must be created and enforced to prevent animal abuse.

This was an appalling situation that simply should never happen in a civilized country purporting to be full of animal lovers.

I am so angry at this. Why was it allowed to go on so long? My heart breaks when I think of what those poor, innocent animals suffered, of what hell they went through. This MUST NOT be allowed to happen again!

I will be only too willing to lobby or get involved further.

Its about time there was some sort of licensing in place to control the way horses are traded. I wholeheartedly support this petition and will continue to do so until laws are changed.

What is there to say that hasn't already been said. Were supposed to be intelligent and a nation of animal lovers aren't  we....What kind of government allows such atrocities to go unchecked.....Trying to get them to actually do something is the hard part. Same with any government.. Life is cheap.......Good luck.......For all there sakes......

Thought it was bad enough here in Spain, disgusted....

The situation at Amersham is completely unacceptable and we must ensure that this is not happening elsewhere and never happens again. The laws on animal welfare and cruelty are obviously not adequate to prevent this and should be changed to include the licensing of equine traders and transportation of horses for meat. Parliamentary questions should be raised in Westminster to ensure a full enquiry.

In my view, this issue is also about enforcement. The conferring of a license should be contingent on an inspection of the premises, and confirmation of qualified/experienced staff. Thereafter, the premises should be subject to regular and unannounced inspections by vets. The regulations covering the transport of horses seem very comprehensive, but I have yet to hear of anyone being prosecuted for non-compliance.

There is still not enough protection for animals - when will the Law wake up and take action?

Legislation is clearly needed here. We should all be ashamed that such a situation as Amersham can happen in a 'civilized' society.

We must stop this cruelty now - not in a few years time.

More visibility of the actions and conditions under which animals for sale are kept. Compulsory audits/inspections should be carried out at least annually and inventories of stock, sales, deaths etc should all be presented to the inspectors whenever they arrive, whether in response to a call from the public or during inspections. No animal should be allowed to die due to neglect, especially when the person in question is already known to the authorities. The welfare act was on our side to prevent this hideous crime....yet so many horses were allowed to continue to suffer and die. A full audit should be carried out on the RSPCA as it seems they did not act quickly enough.

How come you need a license to deal in dead game birds but not in live horses?

Dealers should be required to uphold the same standards required of any livery yard, and be properly licensed and inspected regularly. Horses being traded by dealers, for WHATEVER end purpose, have absolutely the same requirements and rights to proper care and welfare, as any other equine being used for any other purpose.

Whole incident at Amersham is disgusting, bringing in new laws like this might help. At the same time the penalties in fines, jail terms and total ban from keeping any animals ever again need to be put in place for offenders. A slap on the wrist is simply not good enough !

There are several undercover dealers carrying out their dirty business's in the Uk and Europe, there should be better laws and greater powers to protect the equines in these matters in this day and age

All animal ownership should be licenced to help eliminate cruelty and saving thousands of pounds of charities' and taxpayers' money.

As with majority of animal welfare laws, it is not before time. Why do these extreme cases have to happen in order for animal rights to get the attention they so very desperately need.

Its disgusting how horses are left to suffer in this country - I thought we brits were known as a nation of animal lovers: what's gone wrong?

Arrival at ILPH 9.15 -9.30am Saturday 26th January

A convoy of 30 horseboxes laden with donations of tack and other items (with an estimated value of £500,000) from all over the country will be gathering overnight tonight Friday 25th January at Tattersalls in Newmarket. 15 of these will set off for the International League for the Protection of Horses at Snetterton in Norfolk at 8.30am on Saturday 26th and are likely to arrive at around 9.15 - 9.30 am. They will then be unloaded and stored. A further convoy of 15 lorries will then set off to Redwings in Norfolk from Tattersalls at around 10.30am. The donated goods are arriving at the ILPH as part of ‘Operation Esther', a group set up by members of the Horse and Hound online forum in aid of the charities involved in rehousing the Amersham horses. The ILPH has taken in 11 of the horses at a safe location near to its headquarters and it is estimated that it will cost the charity £66,000 to treat and care for them over the next year alone.

    18th January 2008
Every horse, pony, donkey and mule in the UK  is under threat. No matter how much we love them or how  careful we are when we sell them, often these beautiful  innocent animals are  moved  on  countless times many ending up in  seedy, lawless equine markets and  death chambers like Spindles Farm in  Hyde Heath, Buckinghamshire.

On top of this, stolen equines can be moved though the buying and selling process completely undetected.  It is totally unacceptable and irresponsible of our industry to allow equine welfare to be compromised by inadequate protection laws.

Someone who signed the petition asked a question that highlights how ridicules current laws are:

"How come you need a licence to deal in dead game birds but not in live horses?"

    How come indeed!

To honour the 111 (reported by the RSPCA) horses, ponies and donkeys that  paid with their lives or suffered at Spindles Farm we want to collect at least 100 signatures for each individual. This would be a minimum total of 11,100 signatures  to petition for a change in the law and start to put an end to the silent suffering of all horses ponies, donkeys and mules trapped in the  dark disgustingly inadequate system that we have only just begun to accept exists.

We wish to thank everyone of you who has added your name to the petition. Every single signature counts!
Also  a BIG thank you to all the people who have got in touch for petition flyers and put them up in your local tack shops, vets, feed merchants, pet shops etc.
