ILPH delight at jail sentence for serial horse abuser
A serial horse abuser who was found guilty in July 2007 of causing unnecessary suffering to a stallion with a tethering injury, was told to pay further costs of £750 when he appealed against the conviction at Norwich Crown Court on Friday 28th September 2007.
In October 2005, the International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH) attended a location off Mission Road in Diss, where a bay stallion owned by Clonus Jones, 53 of Shelfanger Road, Diss, Norfolk, was found tethered to a 30ft chain with a canvas collar deeply imbedded in its neck. It had also been attacked by another stallion and had open cuts on both sides of its body.
Jones was given a 10 year ban, ordered to carry out 240 hours unpaid work and pay £2,500 costs when he appeared before Thetford Magistrates Court on Monday 9th July.
On Monday 1st October 2007, in an additional case led by the RSPCA, Clonus Jones appeared before Thetford Magistrates Court charged with causing unnecessary suffering to a horse with a severe facial injury caused by a rope head collar. Jones was sentenced to four months in jail and his ban was extended to 15 years. The horse was one of a number removed from a location off Rose Lane in Diss in a joint operation involving the RSPCA, ILPH and a number of other agencies on 21st November 2006.
An ILPH spokesperson said: "Clonus Jones is a serial horse abuser and we are delighted that he has been given a prison sentence and further ban. The ILPH has had dealings with Mr Jones for the past ten years and our Field Officers have been subject to physical assault. It's a shame that it has taken so long to get a fair result but we hope this sends out a strong message to those who abuse animals.".
