Licensing and regulating equine traders and dealers
Dear VFH,
As a girl of 11, I started 'helping' at a dealers yard in Streatham, the owner was not that much older than me (18), but she was good and taught me and the other girls a lot. She also taught us some of the scams that unscrupulous dealers did to horses, so I know very well what some of them did and that was back in the sixties. I don't think much has changed since then - and it is mostly men who do this sort of thing for a quick 'buck'. There are a lot of good dealers out there, but one bad one is one too many, so we need this law.
After hearing that some people in the horsey community look at a new law as an extra tax, I am appalled. If you can afford a horse and to look after it, you can afford to pay a small percentage of the cost of a horse for its welfare. I am ashamed for them, calling themselves horse lovers. They are not.
