DEFRA Management and the disposal of horse manure

DEFRA - Management and the disposal of horse manure

Good management and correct disposal of horse waste is an issue which every horse owner or keeper must address, and generally speaking does not usually create too much of a problem.

Horse waste is potentially harmful (particularly when stored or spread near to water) to the environment and human health. It is therefore important that it is dealt with appropriately and safely.

Horse manure is considered to be a controlled waste and is subject to the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2007.

If you would like more information on the Environmental Permitting Regulations please visit the Defra environmental protection pages or the Environment Agency website.

The Environment Agency has produced a Pollution Prevention Guidance note for Stables, Kennels and Catteries, which gives information and advice on the safe and correct disposal of waste from these types of premises.

Pasture Management
Good pasture management is vital to ensuring that horses are kept safely and in good health. It also impacts on the quality of the local environment and the image of the equine sector within the wider public.

Surrey County Council and The Countryside Agency have created a new initiative for Surrey, called the Horse Pasture Management Project.

It advises on practical ways horse owners or keepers can maintain their paddocks to give maximum benefit to their animals as well as the landscape and environment. Visit the Surrey Pasture Management project information webpages.
